My baby, Cosette, decided to try an escape. The day after Xmas I was home and looked over at their cage to see her hanging halfway out and staying very still. I went over, thinking I was foiling the escape, only to see she had snaged her eye socket on a metal barb. I saw she needed to be pushed on out very carefully so I was going to open the cage and push her from behind, but when I opened the cage, she freaked. She pushed her way back into the cage and screamed. I reached in and grabbed her to see what damage she had done. I applied an antibiotic/pain killer and noticed she had torn her hide around her eye. Since I hadn't had any problems with them in the past, I didn't have a vet. All my non-human friends have been very healthy and I've given them their shots myself. It took my three tries to find a vet that treats small animals. The vet said her hide tore in three directions and it was tough but she did a wonderful job stitching her up and she has healed beautifully. I kept them apart for a week and a half while Cosette healed. When I put them together again, within three days, Luna had removed her stitches and cleaned the wound fully. The whole thing cost me more than 27 times I payed for Cosette but, the moral is, if you take on the responsibility of keeping a non-human animal friend, they deserve the same consideration as a human child. There is really no moral difference. It's the same with medical testing, the study needsd to ask, "Is this needed and would we do it to a two year old human?" We look at infants as needing more consideration because they are more vulnerable, yet we torture non-humans even though they are even more vulnerable being born into this system of torture and slavery. Many have never known any form of happiness and never will. Our choices as a society effect our mindset, our zeitgeist. Is it any wonder we turn on Latino/Latinas? We have a community disconnect? Our xenophobia is ripping us apart? We accept torture and call it interrogation? We start wars and ruin lives while the rich profit off this death? All of creation is interconnected and we reap what we sow. We need to learn how we treat all of creation is how we treat ourselves. Veganism has proved to me just how this is true. Think on these things and look inward for your voice. Sit and be still, let your mind quiet, the truth comes. I love you all.
