Vegans & Vegetarians making a difference!
So my friend and I stood for 2.5 hours in the freezing cold in front of IKEA to collect signatures for the Humane California measure that is hopefully going to be on the November 2008 ballot if enough signatures are collected. This was a first for me as far as petitioning for signatures.
First I will say, people are downright RUDE. It's so unfortunate that people have decided to close their minds as well as ears to not even want to know what we're offering them to sign for and vote for in the future. For the animals, I bit my tongue and remained composed. The people who did take time to at least read the flyers I printed were thanked by me and almost all that took the flyer and read it came back to sign the petition. The people who signed and were polite made up for all the rudeness in that 2.5 hours.
I'm even more thankful for being a vegetarian and knowing that I'm doing a good thing by volunteering my time and speaking up for those who have no voice. Most of the time this world is very cruel but the beauty that we find beyond the ugliness and hatred makes it all worth while. I'm a mother, a vegetarian, a new volunteer petitioner and I work 2 jobs and will be starting some college classes in January. I still made time to go attempt to make this world a better place. I hope others will find time and inspiration to do the same. Animals depend on us because they can't speak up, that's where we come in. Open you minds and your hearts. I know I will be petitioning for the Humane Farming in California measure again as I have until February 2008. At least now I know what to expect and know how I can be better prepared for the next time.
