Vegans & Vegetarians making a difference!
Whilst I was at work today, my partner Fiona took in 2 more rescued dogs destined for the needle from a Dog pound.
She usually tells me there is a surprise waiting for me when I get home & so I now know what this
means ! It might not sound like much I know, but when you consider we already have 23 rescued dogs living with us in the house - & the house isn't that big! - you may see why she is always a little tentative about telling me she has taken in more. Why? - Because I get frustrated - not with her or the dogs, but because my fear is that at some point we will not be able to cope - it's not just dogs you see - there are 29 horses, 26 Pigs, 54 Cats, 28 Sheep, 15 Turkeys & loads more animals - over 300 altogether & just poor Fiona to look after them all - every day, 365 days a year. I help of course at the w/e, but I am at work during the week, desperately trying to earn the cash to help feed them all. At some point, the next animal we give sanctuary to will be the straw that breaks the camels back.
Today the Dogs had come from Doncaster (about 200 miles) & there were 3 of them. Two were able to be taken in by the Sanctuary as they were female, one blind & both old - so no issues with integrating to the existing pack. The other sadly was an entire (uncastrated) Bull Mastiff - so unfortunately we were not able to take him (many of the females are not spayed & too old for a general anaesthetic) plus an entire male would want to take charge & this means fighting - so too much of a risk. You have to realise that with 300 animals, Fiona is not in the house all the time, she is outside seeing to the 100's of outside animals - so if a fight breaks out she would not necessarily be there to break it up. The only other option would be to put him in a stable, but what life would that be? - I am not sure what will happen to him but Fiona did make some calls to see if he could be placed at another rescue - although rescues are busting at the seams.
I heard yesterday that a big UK Animal Charity re-homing centre (the *****) put 30 large breed dogs to sleep last week as they had not been homed - absolutely nothing wrong with them. What makes me very sad is that the ***** has over 2million members paying them an absolute fortune every year & they have so much money in trust, but there is not a single ***** funded sanctuary in this country? Why? Because they won't spend the money. - The things I hear from their volunteers would make you die - the money that gets wasted & they aren't even a veggie organisation.
You can read about all the rescued animals if you want to at the sanctuary website which is www.towerhillstables.com
Update - I have been home from work now a few hours & spent some time with "Pudding" the elderly Staffie - she is such a cutie & the other dog is blind & called Lassie - she is also a little sweetie - both had been found wandering the streets - probably thrown out. These 2 are now safe - as long as we can keep going. I will get their pics posted over the w/e
