I know many christians who are big meat eaters and also buy pets from breeders without hesitation or breed their pets to sell without thinking this could possibly be wrong when there are so many animal shelters out there with animals desperate for homes and to be loved. I have big problems with this. I cannot understand how a christian would eat God's creatures as I believe that we all have equal rights to live on this planet. I'm a bit confused about all of this and would love some feedback on your own opinions on christians who eat God's creatures. I wish I could get some understanding with this. I am sorry if this is an inappropriate board to post this on and if so perhaps someone who has been here longer can direct to me to the correct board. Peace and love to all, Janey (intuitively_vegetarian) xxx
No, no, this is the place to talk about the topic you bring up. This is what this group is for. =-)
Well, as a Buddhist I feel the same about Buddhists sometimes but I have to remind myself too often that just because I have reached a certain conclusion it doesn't mean others have reached the same place in their lives or reached the same conclusions. So I remind myself that it is a time to practice patience and kindness. If somebody asks me about it I will be honest and kind in my discussions.
I know that one other member of this group is Christian and vegan so it isn't unheard of. And, in the discussion forum titled "Resources" here in the group Veg*ns of Faith, there are links to Christian vegetarian pages. =-)
I didn't post anything specifically Christian in the Resources discussion forum. I did post a general page which has loads of links about Christian vegetarianism. It is at the International Vegetarian Union.
Now to get more to the point about your topic Eating God's Creatures. I will say that it doesn't seen logical or compassionate that an all powerful loving God would design a world where those who are made in his image must kill and eat other living beings who feel great pain and suffering when they are killed.
To be clear, I am not saying that this is a reason to reject Christianity. Far from it. I am pointing out that it seems to me that eating the flesh of animals goes against the ideas put for in the Bible about who man is, who God is and how we are supposed to live our lives.
Some Christians I have spoken to even think that animals were created by God specifically to be eaten. To me this is inconsistent with a loving and compassionate God. Why would a loving, merciful and compassionate God create sentient animals for us to eat, and give them a highly developed capacity to suffer and feel fear and pain like we do? That just does not make sense to me. When you really think about it, creating sentient animals for this purpose is a horrible thing to do! This quote is from this article.
I came across this just a few minutes after I posted my other reply and felt that this was relevant and went along with what I posted. The website is really good and has a large list of books about Christianity and vegetarianism.
